In Indonesië worden kokosnootschalen door boeren als waardeloos restproduct verbrand. Silvia ten Houten maakt van deze kokosnootschalen echter een houtcomposiet, zoals MDF (meubelplaat). Alleen is haar composiet sterker, harder, heeft het een schroeftrekkracht die tweeënhalf keer groter is en een brandvertraging die vergelijkbaar is met die van speciaal daarvoor behandeld hout. Een leraar aan het Rotterdamse Hout- en Meubileringscollege noemde het “spul met verbazende eigenschappen”...

In Indonesia coconut husk is burned by local farmers as a worthless waste product. Silvia ten Houten produces a wood composite made from these husks, such as MDF (medium density fibreboard). Only her panel is stronger, harder, has a screw withdrawal force of two-and-a-half times larger, and is as flame retardant as wood that is specially treated. A teacher at the Rotterdam Woodworking, Furniture and Interior Design College (HMC College) described it as “the stuff with amazing properties”...

Coconut startup GoodHout ('good wood’) came out of its shell and won the third LaunchLab program after three months of testing its business model.

We all know coconuts don’t fall far from the tree. That’s why they’re easily picked up, cracked open and stripped from their deliciousness inside. However, the husk is more than often thrown away just as easy as it was picked up...
